Cleaning and Moisturizing a New Tattoo.
Once the initial bandage is off, your tattoo is exposed, and the active healing phase begins. This period requires consistent and gentle care for the crucial first weeks of a new tattoo.
Gentle Cleaning
- Frequency: Wash your new tattoo 2-3 times a day, or as advised by your artist. Over-washing can strip essential oils, while under-washing can lead to bacterial buildup.
- Soap Choice: Use a mild, unscented, antibacterial soap. Look for products specifically designed for tattoo aftercare, or opt for a gentle liquid soap like Dial Gold, Cetaphil, or an unscented baby soap. Avoid harsh soaps, fragranced products, and exfoliating washes.
Washing Technique:
- Why it’s Important: Regular cleaning removes bacteria, dead skin cells, and plasma, preventing infection and excessive scabbing
Moisturizing
When to Start: Begin moisturizing after your first wash, typically after the initial bandage is removed and the tattoo has been thoroughly cleaned and dried.
Product Choice: Select a thin, unscented, non-comedogenic (won’t clog pores) moisturizer. Popular choices include:
- Tattoo-specific aftercare creams: Many brands offer products formulated for tattoo healing.
- Unscented lotions: Aquaphor, Eucerin Original Healing, Lubriderm Daily Moisture, or Cetaphil Moisturizing Lotion are good options.
- Avoid: Petroleum jelly (Vaseline) can suffocate the skin and trap bacteria. Heavily fragranced lotions, antibiotic ointments (unless specifically prescribed by a doctor for infection), and products with active ingredients like retinoids or acids should also be avoided.
Application Technique:
- Ensure your tattoo is completely dry after washing.
- Apply a very thin layer of moisturizer to the entire tattooed area. A little goes a long way.
- Gently rub it in until it’s absorbed. You want the tattoo to look slightly dewy, not greasy or suffocated.
- If you apply too much, gently blot away the excess with a clean paper towel.
- Frequency: Moisturize 2-3 times a day, or as needed, after each wash. The goal is to keep the tattoo hydrated but not overly saturated.
- Why it’s Important: Moisturizing prevents the skin from drying out and forming thick, cracked scabs, which can pull out ink. It also helps to keep the skin supple, reducing itching and promoting a smoother healing process.
